Emotions & Self-Understanding

Why We Avoid Difficult Emotions

Radiant Connections Therapy · Educational article

Understanding the concept

Avoidance can provide short-term relief while preventing opportunities to learn that difficult feelings can be tolerated and understood. Sometimes stepping back is protective; the goal is flexible choice, not constant emotional exposure.

What this might look like

Someone may stay busy to avoid grief, then notice that feelings become more intense whenever things quiet down.

A question to reflect on

Which feelings do you find hardest to make room for, and what helps you approach them gently?
