The Therapy Process

Why Therapy Can Feel Difficult Before It Feels Helpful

Radiant Connections Therapy · Educational article

Understanding the concept

Attending to avoided emotions or unfamiliar patterns can sometimes bring temporary discomfort. Progress is not always linear; however, persistent deterioration, feeling unsafe, or pressure to disclose more than you are ready to share deserves attention.

What this might look like

A person learning to set boundaries may initially feel more anxious as they try unfamiliar responses. Their therapist can help pace the work and adjust the plan.

A question to reflect on

If therapy became difficult, how might you communicate what is and is not helping?
