Why the Therapeutic Relationship Matters
Understanding the concept
A therapeutic alliance involves an emotional bond, agreement about goals, and collaboration on the tasks of therapy. Research consistently finds an association between stronger alliances and better outcomes across treatment orientations. This association does not mean that rapport alone replaces appropriate assessment or effective treatment.
What this might look like
You might experience a helpful alliance when you can ask why an exercise is being suggested, tell your therapist when something feels off, and help shape the direction of your work.
A question to reflect on
What would help you feel able to ask questions or raise concerns in therapy?
