Why Some People Shut Down During Conflict

Radiant Connections Therapy · Educational article

Understanding the concept

Withdrawal or feeling numb during conflict can reflect many processes, including overwhelm, learned protection, fatigue, or fear. It should not automatically be interpreted as indifference.

What this might look like

A partner may grow quiet because they cannot organize their thoughts while anxious; the other person may read the silence as rejection.

A question to reflect on

When you go quiet, what support or space would help you stay connected?
