Understanding Rumination and Overthinking

Radiant Connections Therapy · Educational article

Understanding the concept

Rumination is repetitive thinking about distress and its causes or consequences, often without movement toward a useful decision. Reflection becomes more helpful when it increases understanding or leads to an actionable next step.

What this might look like

Replaying a conversation for hours may feel like problem-solving even when it only increases guilt.

A question to reflect on

Is your thinking helping you act, learn, or connect—or circling the same question?
